    Dr. Matthew Petrie, Principal Investigator

Broadly-trained in the physical and life sciences, Dr. Petrie explores how climate, vegetation ecology and hydrology interact to influence ecological systems. His interests include: 1) biophysical and ecohydrological processes; 2) climate variability and climate change; and 3) applied vegetation ecology. He enjoys developing new ways to combine techniques and perspectives to develop new insight on the physical mechanisms that shape ecological responses.

Dr. Petrie always tries to make as few trips between the truck and field site as possible, even when it actually makes things more difficult. His legendary, unnecessary feats of strength whisper in the winds among the Joshua trees of southern Nevada.

    Dr. Juan Pinos, Postdoctoral Associate

Dr. Pinos is an ecohydrologist who studies the spatiotemporal variability of hydrological processes in the soil-vegetation-atmosphere interface. His research focuses on the role of vegetation cover in rainfall partitioning, evapotranspiration, and soil moisture. Dr. Pinos seeks to enhance our understanding of the interactions between plant ecosystem functioning and hydrological processes to improve forest and water resources management.

    Taylor Brewer, M.S. Student

With a background in applied ecology, Taylor is interested in how ecosystems respond to various levels of biotic and abiotic stress, which includes exploring: community and population dynamics, disturbance and successional regimes, climatic variability, and environmental quality. She is particularly interested in the conservation and restoration of native species, as well as improving ecosystem management at finer scales.

    Keegan Hammond, Ph.D. Student

Formally educated in plant ecology and environmental sciences, Keegan likes to study how plants interact with their surroundings. He has a passion for soil science and remote sensing and would like to merge these two interests more. His master's research had him flying UAVs to improve water conservation in urban and agricultural settings.
